20th Hummingbird Celebration
As Summer Wanes, the 20th Hummingbird Celebration Begins
As we sit in the peak heat of summer, there are reminders around that fall will soon be here. Our early summer blooms of the meadows and forest edges are slowly giving way to goldendrod (Solidago), ironweed (Verbena) and partridge pea (Chamaecrista), and with them the beginnings of another great migration. Along with the warblers, vireos, tanagers and thrushes preparing to ‘wing it’ south to their wintering grounds, we are witnessing the beginnings of one of North America’s greatest natural phenomena: the fall migration of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds.
This year marks a significant chapter in the storied history of Strawberry Plains as we host our 20th Anniversary: Hummingbird Migration and Nature Celebration, September 6, 7, & 8. Mirroring the continued growth of our on-the-ground, community conservation work over the last two decades, Strawberry Plains Audubon Center’s seminal event and fundraiser has evolved from an endearing local treasure into the National Audubon Society’s largest outdoor festival. As we reflect on the efforts which have led to this year’s 20th Celebration, we recognize there is much to celebrate, as we acknowledge the milestones we’ve achieved and the significant opportunities ahead due to your continued support of our year-round conservation work.
Celebrate this milestone with us by attending the festival (now with pre-sale tickets), volunteering, or donating to support the event. This event is the definition of community conservation, whereby every dollar raised, every ticket purchased, and every volunteer’s time and energies feed back to fulfill SPAC’s mission, using education and demonstration, to inspire ecological stewardship and lead community action to conserve and manage our landscape for biodiversity and habitat for birds and other wildlife.
